Susan Bowerman, MS, RD, CSSD, CSOWM, FAND
Welcome to the Healthy Dish – your go-to site for advice on healthy eating, cooking, meal plans and more. I’m Susan Bowerman, Senior Director of Worldwide Nutrition Training at Herbalife. I’m also a Registered Dietitian, a Fellow of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and I am Board-Certified in both Obesity and Weight Management, as well as in Sports Dietetics.
But I’ve got some other titles that I’m just as proud of – I’m a wife of 30+ years, a mom to two great (grown-up) kids, a cook, a gardener, a winemaker and, a bit of a bookworm, too (mostly true crime, if you must know).
My interest in healthy eating stretches back to my adolescence, and I credit my mom for sparking it. She had very few hobbies, but one thing my mom really enjoyed was cooking. She did it well – without the use of cookbooks – and she did it every single night. And, many evenings I was right there with her, helping to get dinner on the table. During my rebellious teenage years we had our fair share of disagreements, but our time together in the kitchen was the great equalizer – we managed to set our differences aside and simply share our love of preparing and serving delicious, healthy food.
One of the things I learned from my mom was that cooking didn’t need to be difficult or complicated, and that the key to great-tasting food was to start with the freshest ingredients you could find. I took this to heart when I moved out of the house and planted my first garden while I was still in college (and, at the time, majoring in English Literature). I loved taking what I’d grown into the kitchen and preparing something wonderful. At about the same time, I realized that I wanted to learn more about human health, so I put the poetry aside and switched my major to Biology.
The rest, as they say, is history. Graduate school – where I earned a Master’s degree in Food Science and Nutrition – was heaven for me. I loved every course, every lecture, every lab. And I couldn’t wait to integrate everything I’d learned in school with my love of cooking and healthy eating – and to help others do the same.
If you asked me to define my career in one word, I’d probably tell you that I am – first and foremost – an educator. In virtually every setting and every position I’ve held, I’ve functioned in some way to teach others about the connections between food, nutrition and good health. And, I guess my literature background never quite left me – my knack for writing led to a two-year stint as a contributing columnist for the Los Angeles Times Health section, and I continue to enjoy writing and teaching as part of my role at Herbalife Nutrition.
I’m happy to say that – just as my mom did with me – I’ve passed my appreciation for healthy eating to both of my kids. My daughter is an avid gardener, and both she and my son enjoy the creative outlet that cooking provides. And my husband and I have established the perfect division of labor – he’s the head gardener, and I’m the head chef. (And, every time we sit down to eat, we have the same conversation…he says the food tastes so good because he grew it – and I say it tastes so good because of the way I prepared it).
I hope what you find on this site entertains, educates and inspires you to enjoy and appreciate all the benefits of eating well – that is, eating food that provides pleasure and nourishment to your body.
Because, when it comes right down to it, good food and good health do go hand-in-hand.
