Natural Sugar vs White Sugar

Confused in the sugar aisle? With so many different sweeteners available, it can be tough to decide what to buy. In this Herbalife video, Susan Bowerman, MS, RD, CSSD, FAND explains how you can make good decisions regarding sugar in your diet.

Some people prefer natural sweeteners such as honey or maple syrup because they believe they’re a healthier choice. Although it’s true that molasses has iron in it and that honey is a source of B Vitamins, the amounts of vitamins and minerals in natural sweeteners is really small. That means there is very little nutritional benefit to using natural sweeteners.

Whether you choose honey, maple syrup, molasses, brown or white sugar, your choice should be based on taste preference rather than nutritional benefit. If you’re watching your calorie count, all sweeteners have about 50-60 calories per tablespoon.
